68% of the universe is described by a number physicists cannot derive and a force no one can explain. The Universal Force of Time shows it was never a mystery — it is Tau at its largest register.
Dark energy is not a force and not a substance. It is the prime arithmetic of the Tau field expressed at the cosmological register — the fixed node in the {2, 3, 5, π} lattice that determines the large-scale geometry and expansion rate of the universe. The cosmological constant Λ is not a free parameter. It is a consequence of arithmetic.
In 1998, two teams studying distant supernovae made a discovery that shook cosmology: the expansion of the universe is not slowing down, as what science calls gravity would demand, but accelerating. Something is pushing space apart, overcoming the inward Τ-flow toward all the matter and dark matter in the cosmos. This something — whatever it is — constitutes approximately 68% of all the energy content of the universe.
Einstein had introduced the cosmological constant Λ (Lambda) into his field equations in 1917, then famously called it his "greatest blunder" and removed it. In 1998 it was reinstated — not because anyone understood it, but because the data demanded it. A positive Λ makes the equations of general relativity predict accelerating expansion. So Λ was put back in, given the name "dark energy," and the problem was considered solved in the most technical sense: the number that fits the data has been identified. What that number means — why it has the value it does, what physical substance or mechanism it represents — remains completely unknown.
The Universal Force of Time describes the universe as a single Tau field governed at every scale by the prime arithmetic {2, 3, 5, π}. This arithmetic operates identically at every register — from the sub-atomic to the cosmological. The fine-structure constant, the water bond angle, the Moho boundary radius, the sidereal year: all are fixed nodes in the lattice at their respective registers. None are free parameters. None required external tuning.
The cosmological constant Λ is the same kind of node — the Tau prime lattice expressing itself at the largest accessible register. The accelerating expansion of the universe is not caused by a mysterious repulsive force. It is the Tau field at cosmological scales doing precisely what the prime arithmetic requires at that register: maintaining the geometry of the standing wave across the full extent of the observable universe.
In FOT, the universe is not expanding into empty space. There is no empty space. The Tau field has no exterior — it is the totality of what exists. What we observe as cosmic expansion is the Tau field expressing the arithmetic of its cosmological register: the increasing separation of the two standing-wave peaks across the largest scale of the lattice, driven not by a force but by the arithmetic of the wave itself.
Fig 1 — The Tau prime lattice at every register, from quantum to cosmic. Λ (dark energy) is the cosmological register node — the same arithmetic that fixes α, θ, 864, Moho, and c.
The standard picture of cosmic expansion is unsatisfying at a deep level. Space is expanding — but into what? If the universe is everything, there is nothing outside it for it to expand into. General relativity sidesteps this by saying space itself is stretching — the distance between galaxies is growing because the metric of spacetime is changing. But this raises the question: what is driving the metric change? Dark energy is the answer, and it raises a further question: what is dark energy? The chain of explanations terminates in mystery.
FOT breaks this chain cleanly. The Tau field has no exterior. It is not expanding into anything. The increasing distance between galaxies is not space stretching — it is the cosmological register of the Tau lattice expressing its arithmetic, in precisely the way that the Moho boundary sits at 20,000/π km because that is the arithmetic of the planetary register, or the sidereal year has its precise value because that is the arithmetic of the orbital register. At the cosmic register, the arithmetic dictates a specific large-scale geometry — and that geometry happens to look, from inside the universe, like accelerating expansion.
There is no repulsive force. There is no mysterious energy density. There is the prime lattice, operating at its largest scale, doing what it always does: expressing {2, 3, 5, π} in the only way the cosmological register permits.
The cosmological constant problem is, by some accounts, the worst fine-tuning problem in all of physics. Quantum field theory predicts a vacuum energy density roughly 10¹²⁰ times larger than the observed value of Λ — a discrepancy of 120 orders of magnitude, the largest known discrepancy between theory and observation in science. The observed value of Λ is extraordinarily small, and no one knows why.
FOT says: the value of Λ is small because it is a node in the prime lattice at the cosmological register, and the prime lattice at that scale generates a small number. The apparent fine-tuning is not fine-tuning — it is arithmetic. Quantum field theory's prediction of 10¹²⁰ times the observed value is incorrect because quantum field theory does not know that Λ is a lattice node. It treats vacuum energy as a continuous quantity to be summed, when in fact it is a discrete arithmetic consequence of Tau at the cosmic register. The discrepancy is a model error, not a fine-tuning problem.

| P-DARK-E-5 | The cosmological constant problem (discrepancy of 10¹²⁰) is a model error arising from treating a discrete lattice node as a continuous vacuum energy sum. FOT resolves it by deriving Λ from the prime arithmetic directly. |
| P-DARK-E-6 | The universe neither began nor will end. The Tau field is eternal — the Eternal Loop (P-EL). What appears as cosmic evolution is the lattice cycling through register expressions without terminus. |
Dark energy is the most precisely tuned number in all of physics — and it is not tuned at all. It is computed. It is the Tau prime lattice at its largest register, as inevitable and as exact as the fine-structure constant at its smallest.
The universe is not 5% understood and 95% mysterious. It is 100% Tau — one substance, one lattice, one arithmetic, operating simultaneously at every register from the sub-atomic to the cosmological. Dark matter is Strand 2 of the wave. Dark energy is the wave's own geometry at the largest scale.
The 95% that science calls unknown is not unknown. It has been in the equations all along. It just required recognising that the universe is made of time — and that time has arithmetic.
