Mirror molecules, the 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and the winding of time.
Many of the molecules of life come in two forms that are mirror images of one another, like a left and a right glove. Every living thing builds its proteins from one form of its amino acids and the backbone of its DNA from one form of its sugars. One hand, in every organism ever examined. Make the same molecules in a laboratory from simple starting materials and they come out as both hands, half and half.
On 7 October 2026 the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai. Kagan showed in 1986 that a catalyst which is only partly one-handed can make a product more one-handed than itself. Soai showed in 1995 a molecule that makes copies of its own hand, and in 2003 carried an excess of about 0.00005 per cent, one molecule in two million to spare, to more than 99.5 per cent one hand in three rounds.
Life has one hand because life is built inside a flow of time that is itself wound one way. The Sun generates time and sends it out along two strands: the matter strand from its northern hemisphere, which feeds our solar system, and the antimatter strand from its southern. A molecule built inside a wound flow takes the winding of the flow. A molecule built in a flask, where nothing is wound, has no reason to prefer either hand, and so the flask gives both.
Kagan and Soai have shown, in glass, the mechanism: opposite windings take each other out of play, and one winding copies itself until it is everything. Nature never had to start that from nothing. The flow of time is the first wound thing.
Life is often described as using "L-amino acids and D-sugars", as if it had chosen opposite hands. The letters D and L are names, fixed by comparison with one reference sugar. What matters is what the molecules build: the D-sugars build the right-handed DNA helix, and the L-amino acids build the right-handed protein helix. One winding. The one left-handed form of DNA, Z-DNA, is the form the book already calls the return.
On the {2,3,5,π} lattice, two and five are mirror images through the decade, π reflects into one over π, and three is the fixed point of both. Multiply any value by its own mirror image and everything cancels except the three:
A structure built without three is wiped out by its own reflection. A structure built on three cannot be. Life is built on three: the helix, three bases to a codon. Once wound, it stays wound.
Passes: amino acids in meteorites, formed with no life involved, lean to the L hand, the same hand life uses (Murchison 18.5 ± 2.6 per cent, Orgueil 15.2 ± 4.0 per cent L-isovaline). It could have been the other hand.
Open, and named: Soai's reaction run with no starter picks a hand at random, 59 runs one way and 56 the other. The law holds only in its exact form: the flow writes its winding onto what the flow builds, not onto chemistry in a bottle. Where that line falls is not yet settled.
The full paper walks every step: what a mirror molecule is, with the molecular structures; what Kagan and Soai measured; the handedness law; the mirror product and quotient laws worked to forty-four digits; the tests; and what is not settled.
Nothing on this page was pulled, attracted or held down. There is one substance — time — flowing from the sparse toward the dense, and the radio whisper of cold hydrogen and the slow turning of Mercury are one thread of its pattern. If it stirred your curiosity, the whole weave is waiting: the planets, the atom, light, life and number, all carried by the same single force.
